Water Treatments, an Experiment by WIJG

Check out an excellent post by Who is John Gall about his findings and photos of an experiment using various water treatments...

from WIJG's "INTRODUCTION:"

"So…I have often wondered, what is the best way to treat water without filtration? I mean, I like water filters, but they have drawbacks: they are often bulky, they may filter slowly, they usually do not filter out viruses, etc. I like the idea of water purification tablets—something that I can include in my little pocket survival kit that I take with me whenever I am away from civilization and so on. Something convenient that will kill the bugs in the container that it is in at the same time that it treats the water…something else that you don’t get with a filter. I mean, if you fill a dirty canteen with pure water from a filter, you still have dirty water, but if you add some water purification tablets to the water while it is inside of that canteen…

I decided to do an experiment using different means of water purification, similar to the experiment that I did with water filters. Originally I intended to only test chemical means of water purification, specifically commercially available water purification tablets and certain household chemicals. However, I had two extra petri dishes so I decided to test boiling water too. ..."

from "Treatments:"

"... I tested eight different water treatments: boiling the sample for 5 minutes, boiling the sample for 10 minutes, tincture of iodine, household bleach, Micropur, Chlor-Floc, Coleman/Portable Aqua tablets, and Polar Pure. ..."
